About this work
Two profile portraits face each other on a cream sheet, one of a bearded man in a wide brimmed hat and ruffled collar, the other of a woman wearing a jeweled headdress and a high collar. Inscriptions beneath identify the sitters as James Smithson and Alice Whitworth, with the dates 1422 and 1436 noted, and credit the sketch to John Hamilton Mortimer and the etching to R. Blyth.
