About this work
This 1855 print by Gustave Doré, titled Rue de la Vieille lanterne [The Suicide of Gérard de Nerval], shows a man in a dark coat recoiling at the foot of a narrow stair beside a glowing lamp post. A skeletal figure with a long pipe hovers above him, while a pale, ghostly form rises from the shadows and a crowd of spectral figures gathers in a lit, theatrical scene above. The dense hatching and white highlights create a dramatic, nocturnal atmosphere typical of the artist's graphic work.
