About this work
This etching by Anthony van Dyck, dated 1626, shows an older bearded man with an upturned mustache, turned three-quarters toward the viewer. He wears a cloak over a buttoned doublet and a lace collar, and gestures with one hand against a background of distant mountains and a cloudy sky. The fine hatched lines model the face, fabric, and rocky foreground.
