About this work
This engraved portrait shows a man with shoulder-length curled hair, a mustache and a pointed beard, wearing a deep lace-edged ruff and a richly patterned doublet fastened with a row of buttons and a medallion on a ribbon. The background is worked with dense horizontal hatching, and a printed French inscription below the image identifies the sitter as Charles, King of Great Britain, France, Ireland, and so on, and is dedicated to Marie de Médicis. The print is attributed to Anthony van Dyck.
