About this work
This etching, titled La Femme (frontispiece), was made by Albert Besnard in 1886. A nude female figure stands against a densely hatched black background, with her head turned slightly and one arm raised, while a dark drape falls around her lower body. The contrast between the lit skin and the heavy cross-hatched shadows defines the composition.
