About this work
This engraving, titled Apollo as Sol, shows a muscular nude male figure with curly hair and a radiant halo, leaping upward while holding a scepter-like rod and gesturing toward the sky. Billowing dark drapery swirls around him as he stands on a cloud above a distant hilly landscape. The work is dated 1591 and attributed to Cornelis van Haarlem, with inscriptions in Latin and Dutch along the lower margin.
