About this work

This brown ink and wash drawing, titled Death of a General and attributed to Benjamin West, shows a group of armored soldiers gathered around a reclining wounded man supported by companions. Spears, shields and plumed helmets fill the scene, with a standard bearer and a row of onlookers at the right beside a draped table. The composition is set before a rocky outcrop and a tent, rendered in soft tonal washes.
