The First Christmas Dawn by Albert Goodwin, dated 1894, is a painting in which a broad diagonal beam of pale light breaks through dark blue clouds and falls across a shadowed landscape. Faint luminous winged figures with halos hover near the light, while sheep rest in the foreground beside a low stone structure. Hazy architectural forms dissolve into the blue atmosphere in the upper part of the composition.
