About this work

A harbor scene at dusk shows two tall-masted sailing ships, one moored beside a tall stone lighthouse and the other sailing toward a fortified tower under a glowing sunset sky. Workers load and unload barrels and jars on a stone quay in the foreground, while figures in period clothing watch from the dock. This is Joseph Vernet's 1766 work, titled Soir, entrée d'un port, held in the Musée Calvet collection.
