About this work

This etching shows a tavern interior where a man in a wide-brimmed hat raises a hand as if to strike while another man grips a fellow player and a woman in a cap looks on. The arched window and shadowed vault frame the scene, and the dense hatching gives the room a dim, smoky atmosphere. The print is attributed to Adriaen van Ostade and dated 1653.
