About this work
An engraved print shows Dido lying dead atop a pyre of branches and household objects, watched by a fainting woman and other figures on a stone terrace. A winged figure descends from the clouds, while a cupid stands nearby and ships sail on the sea in the distance. The bilingual Dutch and French captions beneath the image frame the scene as a burlesque of the classical story, credited to Cornelis Troost.
