About this work

This painting shows a sunlit view across St Mark's Square in Venice toward the pink and white Gothic arcades of the Doge's Palace. Strollers in period dress move across the stone pavement, while the two granite columns and a church dome stand against the lagoon and sailing ships in the distance. The work is signed by Carlo Grubacs and dated 1846 in the lower left corner.
