About this work

The News Reader by Jan Steen depicts a group of men and a woman gathered around a wooden table in a thatched courtyard, one man intently reading a printed sheet while others lean in and listen. A sleeping dog, a clay jug on a barrel, and a potted plant add domestic detail to the rustic setting.
