About this work
A pencil sketch on brown paper shows mounted soldiers leaping over a trench in the foreground while other riders and cheering men gather on a hill beneath a line of trees and a low building. Two flags flank the scene, and figures in the lower left seem to be sheltered near the ditch. Edwin Forbes made this drawing in 1863, and it is catalogued under the title St. Patrick's Day in the army-Jumping the ditch.
