About this work
A pencil sketch shows a column of captured Confederate prisoners marching along a dirt road, flanked by mounted Union guards with rifles. In the background, wagons and tents are spread across rolling fields toward a farmhouse, with a rail fence in the foreground. Edwin Forbes made this drawing in 1863, depicting the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg.
