About this work

A pencil drawing by Edwin Forbes, dated 1863, shows a large leaning tree arching over a river bank. A standing soldier in uniform leans against the trunk while a seated figure fishes near the water's edge, with the calm river and distant shore visible beyond. The handwritten inscription at the lower right records the location as the Rappahannock River near Rappahannock Station.
