About this work

The sheet presents four vignettes of military camp life rendered in brown and yellow wash over pencil. A soldier chops wood outside a log wagoner's shanty, while an abandoned picker hut of earth and sticks stands nearby. Below, a seated soldier whittles beside a dugout-style soldiers' hut with laundry hung on a line, and two men sit by a tent. The work is attributed to Edwin Forbes and dated 1876.
