About this work
A soldier in a slouch hat and cape leans against a tree trunk, rifle held at his side, while slanted lines suggest falling rain across the misty landscape. The companion scene at right shows a bearded soldier carrying a flag and pack beside a cannon wheel, with mounted figures in the distance. The drawing is by Edwin Forbes and dated 1876.
