About this work
A seated soldier in a kepi and greatcoat warms his hands over a small campfire beside a tin cup, with a rifle leaning against a rough wooden lean-to. A second figure walks across the open ground in the background. The drawing is rendered in brown wash with white highlights, and the handwritten caption reads "A Christmas dinner." Edwin Forbes made the work in 1876.
