About this work

A pencil and wash sketch shows a dense column of infantry soldiers with rifles and bayonets advancing through shallow water and muddy ground toward a wooded line. Smoke and figures in the distance suggest combat, and the handwritten caption identifies the scene as the charge of General Ward's troops through Kelly's Ford upon the rifle pits. The drawing is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1863.
