About this work

A pencil sketch on toned paper by Alfred Waud, dated 1860, arranges many small vignettes around a central scene. A group of well-dressed figures gathers around a card table with wine glasses and a fruit stand, while a violinist, standing men and a seated woman occupy a crowded room beneath a chandelier. Handwritten labels such as "Robbery," "Burglary" and "Highway Robbery" appear among the smaller sketches.
