About this work
A pencil sketch on tan paper shows a wide rural landscape with rolling hills and a line of trees, with mounted soldiers, a flag, and figures near wagons in the foreground. The inscription identifies the scene as General Gries's approach to the Oostanaula, May 15, 1864, at the right or west bank at Lay's Ferry. The drawing is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1864.
