About this work

A brown-toned sketch with white heightening shows mounted soldiers riding toward a wooden stockade gate, with cannons visible on earthwork emplacements at either side. Billowing smoke fills the foreground and the lower left, and a handwritten caption at bottom left reads as a note about the stockade and gate closing the approach to the long bridge. Alfred Waud made this drawing in 1861.
