About this work
A pencil and wash drawing shows a wooden steam mill on a rise beside a field, with wagons, horses and figures moving across the ground below. Bare trees and tangled brush fill the foreground and left side. The work is by Alfred Waud, dated 1863, and its handwritten caption identifies the mill near a battlefield used as a medical depot.
