About this work
A pencil sketch shows a bearded man in fringed buckskin gesturing toward a tall man in a top hat who holds a long rifle, while a crowd of men and women in period dress looks on in an interior room. Handwritten annotations in the margins and across the top add notes to the composition, and a caption at the bottom names Seth Kinman, the California hunter, presenting the president with an elkhorn chair. The drawing is dated 1863 and is attributed to Alfred Waud.
