About this work
A pencil and wash drawing shows soldiers in long greatcoats moving among scattered bodies and rifles on a churned field beneath tall trees. Smoke rises from pyres and from two wooden houses in the background, with horses and tents at the edges of the scene. The sketch is by Alfred Waud, dated 1862, and its handwritten caption names Fair Oaks after the battle, burying the dead and burning the horses.
