About this work
A wash drawing with graphite and white highlights shows a battery position with cannons, stacked sandbags, and an American flag in the foreground, with soldiers standing in formation on the right. Beyond a waterway and a long wooden bridge, the skyline of ruined buildings and chimneys of Hampton is visible. The sheet is attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1861, and carries a handwritten inscription identifying the view as taken from the battery that commands the bridge.
