About this work
A graphite and white chalk sketch on tan paper shows a battery of artillery guns and horse-drawn carriages moving across open ground past a split-rail fence, with mounted officers and soldiers in the foreground and distance. The handwritten caption at the lower edge reads "Butlers battery going into position" and the sketch is attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1863.
