About this work
A pencil and white chalk sketch on brown paper shows a battlefield at dusk, with dead and fallen horses in the foreground and a row of artillery wagons and advancing soldiers in the distance. An explosion bursts in the sky and a horse-drawn carriage stands at right. Alfred Waud drew this work in 1862, and the handwritten inscription at the bottom reads 'Confederates advancing to the capture of disabled guns, Gaines Mills.'
