About this work
A graphite and white chalk sketch on tan paper depicts soldiers advancing across a furrowed field while rifles fire and smoke rises over a distant treeline, with a mounted group carrying a flag on the right. Handwritten inscriptions beneath the scene read 'Rosser attacking the rear, Oct. 8th 1864, nr. Harrisonburg, Shenandoah Valley.' The sketch is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1864.
