About this work
A pencil sketch shows uniformed soldiers standing in the foreground while a brass band with horns and a drum performs before a crowd, with an American flag raised among the figures. Barrels, a basket, and a large tree trunk frame the scene, and a handwritten date of 17 June appears in the lower left. The work is by Alfred Waud, dated 1861, and is titled as a celebration of the battle of Bunker Hill near the camp of the 5th Massachusetts regiment in Virginia.
