About this work
A pencil sketch shows the paddle-wheel tug boat Mercury on open water, with a tall smokestack, a flag at the stern, and a wheelhouse near the bow. The handwritten inscription beneath identifies the vessel as the U.S. Tug Boat Mercury, and the drawing is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1860.
