About this work
A pencil sketch on green-tinted paper shows a series of earthen mounds and dugouts with soldiers resting, crouching, and moving through the trenches. A flag flies from a distant rise, and a wooden hut stands among the fortifications. The handwritten inscription reads 'In the Rebel intrenchments' and the work is attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1860.
