About this work
A pencil and white-highlighted sketch on tan paper shows Union soldiers in a wooded landscape tearing up and stacking railroad ties, with thick smoke rising from a burning area. Groups of mounted troops, wagons and tents fill the hillside in the background, and a handwritten caption along the bottom reads Destruction of Genl. Lee's lines of communication in Virginia by Genl. Wilson. The work is credited to Alfred Waud and dated 1864.
