A graphite and white-chalk drawing on tan paper shows a wide battlefield with soldiers in the foreground, some standing and others on horseback, watching distant artillery bursts and smoke. Earthworks and lines of troops extend across the open terrain under a pale sky. The work is by Alfred Waud, dated 1864, and inscribed 'Before Petersburg, at sunrise, July 30th 1864'.
