About this work
A pencil and white chalk drawing on tan paper shows gunboats firing from the water while smoke rises from their guns. In the foreground, mounted soldiers ride through shallow water beside a ruined wooden pier, and officers stand on the shore at right. The handwritten notes and caption record that the scene was sketched from McClellan's headquarters during the 1862 battle of Malvern Hill, by Alfred Waud.
