About this work
A pencil and white chalk sketch on tan paper shows a ruined stone arch rising above a figure in a wide-brimmed hat standing beside a tent. The masonry is broken at the top, and rocks and rubble fill the foreground beneath a heavy, shadowed sky. The work is titled Harpers Ferry, attributed to Alfred Waud, and dated 1860.
