About this work

A monochrome watercolor in brown and grey washes shows a moonlit river landscape with a rowboat carrying figures across the water while armed men stand on the bank beside a large tree. Distant wooded hills recede under a pale moon, and handwritten inscriptions along the lower edge read "Previous to Antietam" and "Rebels crossing the Potomac." The work is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1862.
