About this work
A pencil and white chalk sketch on tan paper shows a pontoon bridge crossing a river, with moored sailing ships and paddle steamers in the background. Covered wagons pulled by horses and uniformed soldiers occupy the foreground beside the bridge. The work is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1864, and its title refers to the Appomattox River below Petersburg at Point of Rocks, near Butler's headquarters.
