About this work
This wash and graphite drawing on tan paper shows mounted troops crossing a rough wooden bridge over a shallow ditch, with smoke rising across a flat landscape under a pale sky. Faint pencil figures of soldiers fill the foreground, suggesting an unfinished study. The work is attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1863, and is titled The first gun at Chickamauga.
