About this work

A pencil and white-chalk drawing on brown paper shows a rebel earthwork with a flagpole and a standing figure on the parapet, while another figure appears at the edge of a trench. The fortification is set on a rolling hill with sloping embankments and gun embrasures cut into the mounds. The handwritten inscription identifies the subject as rebel works beyond Munsons Hill and is signed by Alfred Waud, dated 1861.
