About this work
A wide panoramic drawing in graphite and white chalk on tan paper shows a town of brick buildings and chimneys in the foreground, with a broad field and treeline stretching behind it. Puffs of white smoke rise across the landscape, suggesting artillery fire. The handwritten inscription reads Attack on the rebel works, Fredericksburg, Dec. 13th, and the artist's signature appears in the lower right, consistent with Alfred Waud's 1862 work.
