About this work
A pencil and wash drawing shows large ranks of uniformed soldiers across an open field under a cloudy sky, with a group of officers and a drummer in the foreground beside a kneeling or standing formation of troops facing a smoke-marked clearing. Handwritten annotations along the lower edge and top margin accompany the scene.
