About this work
A pencil and white chalk sketch on brown paper shows soldiers resting, standing and sitting among tents and bare trees in an open encampment. Buildings with a tower stand in the background, and handwritten notes along the bottom describe the 71st New York regiment at Alexandria. The work is dated 1861 and attributed to Alfred Waud.
