A wash-and-pencil sketch on tan paper shows Union artillery crews working cannons amid drifting smoke, with a mounted officer directing the men. A wide landscape of fields, trees and farm buildings extends across the background. Alfred Waud drew the scene in 1863, and the caption records it as the fight at Kelly's Ford with Sleepers battery.
