About this work
A pencil sketch on grey-green paper shows a panoramic view of a city skyline with ruined and gutted buildings, broken chimneys, and church spires in the distance. In the foreground along a riverbank, figures with shovels and picks work near a small rowboat, and the handwritten inscription reads "View of burned district Richmond," attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1865.
