About this work

A pencil sketch on tan paper with white highlights shows a large two-story brick house with a flag on its roof, flanked by smaller outbuildings and bare trees. Several figures in military dress stand in the dirt road in the foreground and around the buildings. The work is attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1862, and its handwritten caption identifies the house as the Nelson House at Yorktown, used as a hospital by the rebels.
