About this work
A pencil sketch shows a line of soldiers in kepi caps firing a cannon on wheeled carriage, with a crowd of onlookers gathered at left beneath a bare tree. Handwritten notes at the top and lower right read "Salute of 161 guns" and a phrase about a dark lowering day. The work is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1861.
