About this work
A pencil sketch on tan paper shows a wrecked sailing vessel listing on a sandy shore, its masts angled toward the sky. Small figures and what appear to be animals are scattered across the foreground, with a flat horizon of water beyond. The work is inscribed by hand with the location 'On the Carolina coast, nr. Hatteras' and is attributed to Alfred Waud, dated 1861.
