About this work

A grey-toned pencil and white chalk sketch shows a column of troops and mounted figures moving through a wooded landscape toward a stream with shallow water. Bare trees frame the left side, and the handwritten inscription at lower right identifies the scene as Sumner's troops crossing the Chickahominy to Fair Oaks. The work is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1862.
